Now known as Leva III, the moon of Levariah had once been a tropical jungle world with its own lush ecosystem supporting a wide variety of vegetation and fauna many of which were native only to the moon itself. Over time though the satellite began to produce an energy source known as Elysium, an uncommon mineral well known for being the fuel of Stentarians, a race of mechanical beings much like Cybertronians. Which would have had little consequence if not for the Stentarian Civil War which led to a battle in the sector, causing an ammonite ship to crash land on the moon, damaged too severely to move but with its communication systems functional. Allowing the survivors to later be evacuated although not before making the discovery of the planets valuable resources.
An event that had catastrophic consequences for the habitat of the planet. As within, only a few days after the survivors were evacuated, Ammonite mining teams arrived on world with direct orders to salvage any and all available resources. Then without guilt, they did so, sweeping across the world with massive machines that consumed all in its path, destroying entire jungles within days as it gathered the resources of the moon. Soon leaving it lifeless as entire races fighting their extinction were quickly wiped out without remorse. All that remained afterwards was a barren world, incapable of sustaining life but with Elysium deep within its veins.
A perfect site for the Ammonite fortress that it would later become, as it’s core was mined creating a labyrinth of passageways deep into its innards that became dangerously unstable without metal supports that gradually began to takeover the satellite’s original material composition. Until many centuries later, the fortress of Ambexion had no resemblance to the moon it had once been apart of with entire districts running across a metal shell that covered the remnants of the moons organic remains.
Eventually, though even the Ammonite’s control of the moon was lost, a result of their war travelling elsewhere and growing pirate bands in the sector that made maintaining an outpost with no resources of its own unfeasible. It was only then due to an assault by cooperating pirate bands, that the moon wasn’t scrapped for salvage as the Ammonite’s were forced to retreat before salvage operations could begin. Which left a heavily defended fortress in the possession of multiple allied pirates, desperate for their own safe haven.
A necessity after their activities had garnered the attention of a number of planets military and security forces. One of the main reasons why despite all odds their unification didn’t crumble instantly under greed and their hate for each other. Not to say it didn’t eventually as within a few years their alliances died under betrayal and losses to the very forces their safe haven was meant to protect them from.
In the end only a few of the gangs survived, although their version of Leva III did not as their power and strength dwindled gradually the base began to open up, not only as a safe haven to others in hopes it would lead to their own protection but also as a merchants post. One that became profitable in a short time, as within months more scavengers and dealers called the moon home than the original pirates that had allowed them access. In turn, the fortress began to change, with the addition of many commercial buildings and an expansion of the settlement areas that soon led to it becoming more of a city than a base. At which point rather than stop it continued to grow rapidly. Soon skyscrapers that stretched miles into the sky replaced guard towers and barracks equipped for hundreds where replaced by state of the art shopping malls with neon signs that had little care for advertising laws.
For merchants it was a paradise and in response customers flocked in mass searching for deals and the possibility of hidden gems, of which there was many as entrepreneurs saw the potential and began setting up their own establishments. Soon all across the sector any civilisation with space-flight capabilities knew of Leva III, the gem of Levariah. The greatest sight of fortune and wealth anywhere in the system with golden spires and casinos that rivaled the greatest palaces across all the worlds.
They said Leva III, rained with oceans of success for those who knew how to play the game.
For a time it was even true.
Now though, that time is long gone. The wealth that once flowed to the masses has long dried up with dams that restrict it to those on the highest rung of society. With only trickles falling through to the desperate and damned blind to the fact Leva III is no longer a gem. Not that it is easy to tell in its most wealthy areas. Nor is it blatantly obvious in the common districts usually visited by travellers and those fortunate enough to possess some form of support that keeps them from drifting to the lower levels.
In fact, for the majority who live there, the trickles that fall through are more than enough to sustain them better than many other worlds could provide. To the point, they move on completely unaware of the corruption that has seeped into the moon, as behind the scenes rival pirate gangs fight for control of districts where even the wealthiest are forced to pay protection money. Just one of the many sacrifices residents pay alongside the taxes to maintain their maintenance systems, a necessary service that without its existence would have the city crawling with waste within hours. A scrapyard of faded bronze and gold, illuminated in sickly neon lights.
